I remember the first time I found an album by Sonic Youth in my radio station's library. It was during the ugly period of time when religious groups decided that late night public radio was no longer untouchable. I had chosen an album side long selection by SY. I carefully went through the piece, reversing just enough letters of &$#" so everyone would know for certain what was said. I put this on and held my breath.The chaos of Sonic Youth made it delicious & more 30 years ago. But it took a long time to get people to listen seriously.Finding a symphonic tribute all these years later was a bit frightening. I could only think of the time I heard 'Stairway to Heaven' played on elevators by 101 strings. I was horrified.Thankfully this a far shot from that. And it shows how far we've grown as a people musically. It is not an attrocity, quite the contrary. It shows that neither you nor I were 'insane' when we put needle to vinyl so many years ago. Sonic Youth deserved every bit of our awe & attention.A presentation by this fine group of musicians is a welcome idea. It is not really so shocking to hear generations later that what was music to your ears is respected by classical musicians. They have ears too.
